The journey
of your kimono

  1. It begins with an encounter

    It begins with an encounter

At Kimonogatari, you are welcomed as a friend—for everything begins with an encounter: between women, and with a kimono.
We take the time to listen, and to choose together the kimono that moves you. We consider together the design in which you will feel most wholly yourself.

  2. measurements

We take your measurements with care. We can, too, awaken one of your own kimono, and answer your wishes with a creation like no other.

  3. Your kimono passes through many hands

Your kimono passes through many hands

The making we then entrust to gifted Japanese artisans alone, where each gesture is wrought by hand. Several artisans join their masteries to bring your garment to life.

  4. The unstitching

    The unstitching

The kimono is first placed in the care of a specialist house, which unpicks and cleans it with expert hands, while we draw the pattern for your creation.

  5. The pattern

    The pattern

We draw the pattern for your creation.
Where it is called for, we arrange an intermediate fitting in muslin, to see how the cloth falls upon you before it is cut.

  6. The making

    The making

Once the cloth is prepared for our ateliers, the making is entrusted to gifted artisans alone, where each gesture is carried out with the utmost care.
All our making is done in Japan.

  7. The presentation of your creation

    The presentation of your creation

Some weeks later, we meet once more, for the fitting and any final refinements.
When the garment sits upon you to perfection, we place your singular creation into your hands.
Should you be travelling in Japan, we shall find whatever arrangement best suits you for its delivery.

Our promise

Every creation carries a twofold mastery:
a distinctly Western eye on Japanese cloth,
joined to the exclusive hand of Japanese artisans for a flawless finish.

Every pattern is designed so that you feel completely at ease;
every detail, to bring out the beauty of the cloth—itself
a work of art—and to show you at your best.

You become co-author of the story of the women
who passed this kimono into your care;
and you are free to add your own chapter,
through a creation that is singular and timeless, carried on antique silk.

We give our part to the preservation of Japanese craft,
devoting two percent of our profits to JapanCraft21,
a foundation dedicated to the crafts and callings of Japan.

Begin my story

You wear far more than a garment: you wear a story, and you carry it onward.

Kimonogatari imagines a fashion of conscience,
in which the bespoke is not a luxury but the natural way of things,
and endurance is a philosophy.

We believe in the power of stories woven into silk, in the grace of encounters between cultures,
and in your own power to carry forward an inheritance that crosses every border.
